I had a young girl come in with an infected tongue piercing. I removed the barbell and with a gentle squeeze of her tongue watched copious amount of green pus ooze out of her tongue. In 25 years in dental, that still qualifies as the grossest thing I've ever seen.

So... keep it clean!

Rinse as frequently as you like with sea salt and water. 1/4 teaspoon of sea salt to 8 oz of water. Rinse once or twice a day with a antibacterial mouthwash (ie. Cepacol). Rinsing too often with mouthwash can irritate the tissues and leave your tongue discolored. Take your ring or barbell out and soak it in a sea salt and water solution. If it's crusty, lightly brush it off with your toothbrush. No peroxide or rubbing alcohol.

If you suspect you may have an infection developing, get to a dentist immediately.

Good Luck.

btw, betadine solutions can discolor gold jewellery.

No, No, NO that wont work go get a medium strength mouthwash like "betadine" right away.

I have had my tongue pierced for the past 8 years, and honestly i didn't really bother using any special mouth wash, i just drank alcohol and it worked really well. also do not for get when brushing your teeth also brush your tongue as well, your sea salt water mix won't hurt but do use a lil mouth wash every now and then, this just helps clean it and get rid of any bacteria. i hope this helps. also i would say it was just your slurpee but if your tongue hasn't gone back to its normal colour soon go and see a doctor
