I had a front tooth taken out and I have been back to the dentist and found out I have a dry socket?

I am still in a lot of pain the dentist put a dressing on it yesturday, it has came out now and I am still in pain, how long will the pain last, and what are the best foods to eat, and is there anything I can do to ease the pain apart from taking painkillers?
