How long is it normal to have pain after having a tooth filling?!

Question: I had a filling about 3 weeks ago and it is still sensitive to heat and cold. Also, my dentist does not do silver fillings. Is this common? My insurance pays more for silver fillings.

It is normal to have sensitivity for a few days to about a week after a filling is done, especially if the filling is placed in the dentine layer. This is the layer which some of the nerve endings that transmit the sensation of pain. It should resolve within a weeks time. If you are still having the pain then meet the dentist.

Silver fillings are not preferred by some because of two reasons. One is the fear of mercury toxicity and the other is its dark coloured appearance. Various studies have ruled out the toxic effects of mercury used in silver fillings. Both silver and white coloured fillings share almost the same amount of durability.

The advantages of white coloured filling is that the amount of tooth to be drilled for the purpose of filling is minimal and once done the filling cannot be distinguished.

I would think its not the fillings....
its the teeth....
I would say mine have been more sensitive for a couple weeks - and he said (the dentist) that that wasn't all that unordinary...

I would pop in and have him take a look at the actual filling though - he shouldn't charge you - just to make sure that its fitted tight, etc.

Hope its not bothering you soon.

I sometimes have a lot of sensitivity like that after I get mine done. Often it's just the way the tooth reacts and nothing is wrong. If you don't normally have a problem with that though you could stop in and get it checked. Just to be on the safe side.
My dentist had me use Sensodyne for a while and that helped.

When it comes to the fillings I have no clue. I personally prefer the enamel colored ones cause they don't show.
