Do retainers get old?!

Question:

Do retainers get old?

I have retainers that I wear fairly regularly, a top and bottom one. They're metal wire and hard plastic. I've had them about 10 years and was wondering if I'm ever supposed to get new ones made or if these are lifetime buddies. I don't really have any problems with them, just don't know the lifespan of a retainer.

Answers:

I'm a dental assistant. The metal can get weak, especially after 10 years. It might be a good idea to at least get it checked out. Take it to your next dental appointment and have your dentist take a look at it. If he thinks it needs replaced he can refer you on to an orthodontist if you don't remember who did your braces.
