It is normal for your gums to hurt, you have been wounded and your gums are reacting appropriately. Only you know if the pain is abnormal.

Dry socket is about the most painful dental problem I can imagine, although I have had an abcess and that pain escalated quickly and took me out, literally, of my life for about 5 days while I lived on pain killers and antibiotics following the treatment.

Don't smoke or eat anything tough or spicy. Rince with warm salty water often. Don't play with the stitches and if the packing comes out (it is a brown and stringy meatlike substance so don't mistake it for food) call your dentist at once. And, use your common sense.

Dry sockets occur when air is trapped in the gum, where the widom teeth were removed. The best way to avoid dry sockets is to not drink from a straw (anything that causes a sucking motion). You probably don't have dry sockets if you just had them pulled and your in pain. You should call your Dentist and ask if he can perscribe some pain medication, but dry sockets aren't usual.
