What do the numbers mean?!

Question: when you are at the dentist for a routine check up they call out numbers. For each tooth they say which number tooth it is and another number. Dose anyone know what the other number is for?
Or does anyone know a website that tells you??

It's a professional secret, so don't tell anyone I told you but.... we aren't actually psychic, this is how we know if you were really flossing or just lieing when we asked ;-)

It's called periodontal probing. We measure the pocket depths of the tissue around the teeth. The numbers you hear are measurements in millimeters. As a basic rule, 3 and under is okay, 2 is better. Anything 4 or more, it's likely you have some degree of periodontal disease. So if you really did floss regularly, all the measurements will be 3 and under.

its like names for each of your teeth

Its just the dentists' system of identifying teeth which need attention.

gum measurements

Each tooth has a number to identufy it - saves saying 3rd tooth on the left at the top etc.

It's used as a method of identification and helps health insurance companies for benefits

It slightly different in each country but all use for the same reasonof identification

The first number is the tooth number, which are 1-32. The second number is probably the periodontal pocket (the space between the tooth and the gums) measurement, in millimeters.

*Edited to say that the above (1-32) is referred to as the Universal Numbering System, while the Palmer Numbering System is numbered 1-8 in each quadrant, starting at the midline. The Palmer method is more commonly used by orthodontists....

Right upper teeth 87654321 12345678 Left upper teeth
Right lower teeth 87654321 12345678 Left lower teeth

8's are your wisdom teeth.
