Dr. Sam, a question about receeding gum lines?!

Question:

Dr. Sam, a question about receeding gum lines?

I was bulimic for 8 years and my teeth have suffered. My gum lines are significantly receeded and I've had numerous facial fillings to help. My teeth as well are worn down. I am worried about them and wondered if there was anything I could do to save them from receeding more? My dentist says its because I brush too hard but I have an electric oral B now and use Procare by Sensodyne. Any suggestions will help. Thank you.

I also have the same problem on a lot of teeth. I was brushign wayyy to hard. Ask ur doctor to teach you how to brush. I did that and realized I was beating up my gums. I also have fillings on them. Rule out gum disease first. My doc suggested to do gum grafting. Where they take tissue from the roof of ur mouth and stitch it to the places where gums have receeded. I am planning to do this later this year. I've heard from friends that the tissue placed there will be stronger. I also use to use Oral B. Hard beating on my gums. The bristles are wayy to hard. I used the single head and the dual head. Then I switched to Sonicare, much improved but still too hard. Now I use Rotadent. Switch to a soft bristle brush. The thing to remember is to NOT scrub, let ur toothbrush do the work. Brush up to the gumline gently. Tickle ur gums. Go up to them in a "M" shape. Best to ask ur doc to teach you. Also, use light pressure. If u are pressing too hard, use 3 fingers or 2 to hold the toothbrush. Good luck!
