Everyon is a little anxious when going to the dentist :).

The first thing is going to have to happen is to make that area numb. Once you are ok in that area, the temporary filling is going to be removed. I usually do that with a slow speed handpiece, so that i don't damage any adjacent walls. I only want to get the temporary out. However, using a slow speed is something that requires more torque, so you will feel more vibration with this handpiece compared to using a high speed handpiece.

Once the temp is out, the area around it assessed for any further decay, and it is removed. Depending on the extent of decay, further work (root canal) may be needed. Once the decay is removed, we place a filling. ( If the filling is going to be more than 50% of the tooth structure, i recommend a crown or inlay.)

After the filling is placed in, we check your bite, and make sure that you can bite on both sides evenly. Once we complete that, you are free to go. You shouldn't chew on that side for the next hour or so, since you will be numb on that side.

Hope that helps.
