I had a tooth pulled over a month ago and now i have a problem..?!

Question: The tooth started to hurt so I went to the dentist to have it pulled. It was one of the bigger teeth closet to my wisdom tooth so he had to do a little cutting to get it out. Thus causing me to get a stitch. At first there was a minor ache there as if the tooth was still there. I figured that was part of the healing process, but now here we are a month or so later and my gum still hurts! There is a bump/lump where the stitch was removed and I am able to pinpoint the pain as coming from right there.. It doesnt hurt when im up and at em, but its very hard for me to sleep at night without taking pain killers. Is this a prolonged dry socket? an infection? anyone ever experience the same problem? The dentist just milks me for every penny everytime i go (and i have insurance) so im just looking for some alternatives right now to understand the problem and stop the pain. alcohol numbs it for a minute as does saltwater & peroxide but jeepers creepers, how much longer is this going to go on??

I can't tell you how much longer this will continue-but I can answer a few other questions for you. It's not a dry socket, no. A dry socket happens in the healing process, and refers to the spot in the jawbone where the tooth roots used to be. When you remove a tooth, you create a big hole in the bone, and that has to be filled in with new bone. Until it happens, the bone can lose the clot and dehydrate- hence the term "dry" socket. Anyway, you are well healed as far as that goes, so it's not possible. And the ache would be in the jaw- not the gums. What you describe sounds a lot more like a foreign object rejection underway. Sometimes when a tooth is pulled, a small splinter of the bone or even the tooth will come off. It's really hard to see at the time, as it's small and there's a lot of blood and tissue in the area. It may also be a tiny piece of suture material. If it's bone or tooth, the body is willing to tolerate it for a while- unlike say a wood splinter in your finger which definitely doesn't belong, the bone or tooth bit does. The sharp edges or tips will aggrivate the gum, though- as you are eating or whatever. The aggrivation will cause the tissue to force it to the surface- creating the bump you see in the gums. Like a regular splinter, with time the immune system and gum tissue will push it to the surface and out of the gums. And until that happens, the immediate area will be complaining. Sometimes a dentist can locate the offending bit with an xray- most often though, they can't, unless it's where they can feel it with a probe. Then of course, they can locate it and remove it with a forceps. That unfortunately will still leave you with a sore spot for a few days. If you don't want to revisit the dentist, you can wait it out yourself, and when it shows on the surface, you can use a tweezer to get it out yourself. You can hurry the process along with mouthfulls of hot liquids, allowed to pool and cool at the spot. That will bring in more blood flow, which encourages the surfacing to happen a little faster. If the bump appears to be forming a whitehead, though- then you have an abcess forming, and that will require a dentist-preferably the one responsible for meddling in the area to start with. That's a complication of his treatment, and one he should be responsible for taking care of. If it were me, I'd try the hot drinks method and give it a few days more to see what gives. A few days should let you see which it's likely to be, and possibly save you a few dollars and some aggrivation. Meanwhile, the Ibuprofen (Motrin) up to 800mg should cover the pain for you at night. Teeth always seem to hurt worse at night, usually because we are quiet and have the time and peace to become more aware of them. Just keep up the regular dental hygiene, you don't need to do anything fancy there, and really, salt water and peroxide aren't all that for taking care of the mouth. Peroxide is pretty harsh on even healthy tissue, so you really want to skip that. The baby teething gels will help numb things better than all the stuff you are using now, and it's kinder to gums. Good luck, hope it solves itself for you in a few days.

umm i dont think you should just ignore it with pain killers and stuff id sugest go to the dentsit and explain!!

Either see another dentist or go back but tell him its a follow up visit thus less to pay.
Sound to me like there is a bit of tooth still in the gum, right now I have the same problem but will see a laser guy less messy.
I have known people to have some part of a tooth show up many years later so its not that unusual.
I'm using SM33 its for babies and it works great on big people as well

Best Of Luck
