It stays in place because it's anchored to the bone and it will stay there until that connection comes loose, which for most people is for the remainder of their lives. For some reason yours is now loose which could mean a number of things that only your dentist can address for sure.

Well probably that tooth isn't loose because of the root canal, but because of bone loss. Are any others loose? If you haven't had recent x-rays you should, these will show if you have bone loss and how much.
A root canal actually makes the tooth weak, you should have had a cap put on it. If you did than it is not the tooth that is loose it's the cap. Have your dentist put the cap back in again. If you don't have one get one or you will lose the tooth.
