Shape of the tooth filling on a molar tooth?!

Question:

Shape of the tooth filling on a molar tooth?

Hi All,

I have a question about how the shape of a tooth filling on an upper molar tooth is supposed to be. I recently got a filling on one of my molars. While the scaling or height of the filling is ok, I checked my filled tooth with mirror and saw that the filling looks like a bulky filling (like a small pea) almost in the middle. I think the shape of the molar is like a crown (not dental crown, I mean literally as shape), i.e. heigher at the boundary and lower in the middle. Then why this dentist shaped the filling like a pea in the middle. It is about the same height of the crown. Is that normal? It does not give me a discomfort. However it looks weird when I look at it. Ok, I do not check my molar tooth with a mirror in my hand all the time, but having seen it like that, it attracts my thoughts now. Do you think it is a bad filling, bad shaping? Should I go back to my dentist? What do you suggest?

Thanks

Answers:

Most people care very little about most aspects of their dental care. Then ther'es the 10 percent that are like you, amazingly obsessing over little details. That's ok! it's nice that people really care.

Anyway, how does it look in comparision to the contralateral tooth on the opposite side?? that's the big question. also, is your BITE ok? if the bite feels good, it's probably fine. if hte bite is high, it needs to be ground down.

I'd just check w/ the dentist at your next cleaning/checkup. :) good luck.
