i am the same way! i went to dentist last week for checkup and they were using that damn hook thingy to scrape and i hated it :(( i have an appointment on april 29th to get my cavity filled :((! last time i had a cavity was about 10 years ago and i was very afraid to have it filled but did anyway! it turned out i was scared for nothing! i did not feel a thing! but i am still deathly afraid to go get this one filled! i usually close my eyes and think of something calming and try to concentrate on the music thats being played! also trying holding something soft like a tissue in your hand.

1) wear ear plugs
2) ask him to tell you right before he starts, then you will be kinda ready for it.

I hope this helps!! ;)

Try taking your iPod and cranking it up to drown out the noise of the drill.

Tell him about your fears; maybe could give you IV Valium or another tranquilizer. Has worked for me; I'm utterly petrified of dentists!!
Sometimes expressing openly the fear will lessen it.

Learn some relaxation techniques, ask for nitrous oxide, take your ipod and ear buds and wear them so you don't hear the drill so much, take an aspirin or Ibu before you go so your mouth won't be so sore later,

Any Dentist has lots of patients who are afraid of the "drill" for one reason or another. They don't want to cause you pain and I think they feel bad when you are frightened even though they try hard to be reassuring and gentle.

As him - at another time - if he has any suggestions for ways to relax and reduce the anxiety you feel. He probably has been to workshops on just that topic.

i hate the dentist also but not that much. try taking an mp3. also, just try to relax and remind yourself that it is not open heart surgery, it is just a filling.

Usually if you have had an incident with a dentist, and are going to the same denist, he will offer some type of nerve medication. Normally it is in pill form, IV meds are too much for this type of problem. Plus you would have a needle being stuck in your arm. Does your Dentist not offer nitrous oxide? (gas) that is the only thing that helps me. You may think its not helping, but it is actually relaxing you, plus when the procedure is complete, the gas gets shut off and oxygen is what you are breathing, that way you can drive or at least walk straight to the door when you leave. If a nerve medication is needed, you will need a driver. Normally this is given if you are having oral surgery, not a filling or cleaning. But gas is available for all procedures. Hopefully it is available in your area, and your dentist does use it. If you are already using gas, talk to your dentist about other options.

ask your dentist to prescribe you an antianxiety drug that you would take just before your appointment, this will help relax you alsote
