Solution to long tooth, what can be done?!

Question:

Solution to long tooth, what can be done?

Mainly for anyone in the dental field....

but I was in an accident and my front top tooth was displaced. It was repositioned about 6 months ago and is healing well. It couldnt be put in all the way due to swelling and blood, which could of caused infection. My question is, can a long tooth be fixed and if so how? I'm not talking a little, its very noticeable when I open my mouth. Maybe 3mm or so. How can this be fixed? File it down? veneer? Or am I doomed to live with this long tooth forever?

Answers:

There is a possibility of having this fixed though without seeing the actual xray it is hard to tell. Depending on the structure of the tooth, It may be able to be filed down, but at 3 mm, you may run into sensitivity issues. Veneers are an option but they do not always hold up as well. I would consider crowning it, There are many different shades to match your other teeth, and most people when they smile, you cannot see the gum/teeth line. (Since there is usually a little line that is noticeable on crowned teeth.) Crowns are safe, they last a long while if taken care for properly and will also protect that tooth. Porcelain should hold up very well in the front since the anterior teeth are not the primary masticating teeth. Ask your dentist for the best possible options for you, and what would be the least amount of work and the best solution. Good luck hun! No matter what it may look like, a smile is always better than a frown.
