I have had braces for about a year and a half...
number one, they aren't as bad as people say that they are!! and my braces have given me really good results!

a couple things that i have learned...
before leaving the dentist, stick your finger behind your back tooth and make sure that there aren't any wires sticking out... trust me, it's horrible if you have sticking out wires because they put cuts in the back of your mouth and it hurts really bad.

the first week you probably need to carry some wax around that the orthodontist usually gives you in case your wires or brackets are bugging you

right after the orthodontist puts on your brackets and wires take tylenol or advil... your teeth ache the first night and next day

milkshakes!! :]

well those are the best tips that i can give you, good luck!! i hope your teeth get really straight!

my braces hurt like hel*

An expander is placed in your teeth to make space for your braces. Basically you it is like a rubber band that stays in your mouth for several weeks.
I don't know what a separator does because I never had one.
One poignant piece of advice I have for when you have braces is to really be careful about what you eat, because food does get stuck easily and sometimes too hard of food will break it. The soreness stays for a few days, fyi, and be really consistent when you brush your teeth. If you don't you get 'tan-line' looking marks.

i also have braces
ok, let's begin with a separator, they are rubbers, that will be inserted in between your teeth to create a small space where the crown will be placed.. it'll be there for about a week or two, you will feel the pain after 8-12 hours after it has been set to your teeth. well, be sure to eat your favorite food before your appointment, lol!. At that time, i had a hard time eating coz it's really painful. i chew my food using my front teeth, and i can't barely taste the food im eating..
my dentist said that if i can't stand the pain, i can take a pain reliever, but im not used to it, so what i did was, i ate ice cream or something that's really cold or freezing just to make my teeth so numb!
if you have a lot of questions, you can send me an email :D

i dont know about expanders and separaters, but i know that the first few days to a week, your mouth will be pretty sore. for me, drugs didnt work to well, but my dad would crush up ice and id suck on it, and it felt soooo good. way better than anything the drugs did. dont shew the ice, just suck on it. it should help a lot. when you first get braces, dont eat bread! it gets stuck in your braces really bad and its really hard to get it out. same with noodles... anything bready really. you can have it like, once you get used to getting food out of your braces, but the first day, i recommend not eating bread. lol.

Both of those things that u mentioned go inbetween your teeth. When you get the braces They'll hurt for 3 days to a week but then they'll be fine

i just got mine off!... omg they hurt so bad the first day or two and when u have the umm bands changed and when they come off.. if i remember correct the expander expands the roof of ur mouth... it is hard to eat like bread.. ok i hope it goes ok!
