Roof of mouth is hard and convex, just like a walnut.?!

Question: My daughter-in-law had dental surgery about a month ago, to extract wisdom teeth. Her palate is hard, wrinkled and rounded, appearing just a like a walnut. No pain or discoloration.
Any ideas? I told her it may be an abscess following the extraction..She will see the oral surgeon later this week..but is pretty stressed right now.

It sounds like your daughter-in-law has a palatal torus. It is a benign bone growth that occurs either on the palate or on the lower jaw, below your teeth on the tongue side. It is likely she has had it for a while and has only noticed it after inspecting her mouth post-surgically. There is no pain or discoloration associated with tori, and no treatment is indicated unless she needs a denture and it interferes with the fit of the prosthesis. I would still get it checked out by a dentist. Tori usually lie right in the middle of the palate. If the growth is not symmetrical or is favoring one side, I would be more inclined to call it something else. Perhaps a salivary gland tumor or some type of cyst. The oral surgeon will be able to tell you what it is at the follow-up exam.

That sounds more like a torus which is a bony growth which occurs in different places of the mouth. I had a walnut size one removed from the roof of my mouth. If she had an abcess she more than likely would be having pain and fever.

The roof of a persons mouth is called the HARD PALATE. It's called that because it's hard. It also usually shaped like a dome, has small shallow pockets near the front (behind the front teeth), then smooths out at the top and near the back teeth. There is also usually a a split that run from front to back. Near the back of the mouth, just in front of the uvula, the palate becomes soft. This part is called the SOFT PALATE. And yes, it's called that because it's soft. I suggest you get yourself a small mirror and angle it so you can have a look in your own mouth. While you're at it take a look at the roof of several other people's mouths.

An abscess is like a pimple. It's a pus filled pocket. They are also painful.
