Oral Surgeon vs. Dental Office?!

Question: I've recently found out from my dentist that my wisdom teeth are coming in, all 4 of them. The problem is, they need to be removed.. he told me they can be done in the office, or by an oral surgeon. The office can do it at any time convenient to my family and it's a lot closer, however they only freeze your mouth, they don't put you under. With the oral surgeon, it's further away and they have long booking times and they do put you under (ie. Knock you out with gas). The problem is, I've never had any kind of invasive surgery done in my life and I have a big fear of such. I would much prefer to go to the oral surgeon, but my mother has been telling me how I need to get over my fears and go with the dental office. Does anyone have advice on this?

If you only needed two out on the same side of your mouth, a regular DDS could do the job just fine. However, all four at once would mean that a regular DDS would have to numb both sides of your mouth at the same time and that's not usually a good idea...and by the way, this so called "freezing"...no thanks, and I been in the dental field for over 40 years. A good DDS would first give you Nitrous Oxide Gas to calm you down, then he or she would gently inject an numbing anesthetic back in the jaw joint area. The sensation the injection produces is no more than a little pinch sensation, really no big deal.

Now, if "all" four are to be removed at the same time, I'm going to have an Oral Surgeon do it. He or she will give you some Nitrous Oxide and then through a tiny IV in your arm give you total sedation...you'll be off for a nap. When you wake up your minus four wisdom teeth...You see, the total sedation doesn't risk numbing your throat and posing any breathing or swallowing issues. Hey, good luck and I wish you well.

I wouldn't go to anyone who would freeze my mouth....OUCH. You can have a local. Shots to numb you up with novacaine. Seriously your mom needs to be more caring about this than telling you to get over your fears. Look into it further and if you must choose another dentist or oral surgeon altogther. Good luck too you and I hope the experience is as painless as possible for you. You might also inquire about a pill you can take to help you to relax since you've never had any work done before.

I had it done at an oral surgeon. All four of them too. It really wasn't bad, and i think i would have perferred it that way. I had a shot, and i was out in about 15 minutes or so. When I woke up, I didn't even realize they were finished, it was weird.

My little sister had it done in the office. She said it wasn't bad, but since you're not sleeping, you can hear everything they're doing, and that in it's self would scare the crap out of me.

So i suppose it's up to you. Good luck. And recovery isn't bad at all.

If having all 4 at once, recommend oral surgeon. They normally don't just use the gas either. They normally IV sedate you. Also, wisdom teeth is a major surgery in that there are a lot of major nerves that can be damaged if not done properly. Also, if your wisdom teeth may have roots that are bent and very difficult to remove. You need an oral surgeon if it is surgical or even if it is just 4 wisdom teeth that are erupted.

i would rather be put too sleep

Don't worry my mom is like that seriously i hate when people are nasty and think it's so easy, we all have different feeling lol anyway, im getting my wisdom tooth off tomorrow , and its going to be at a regular dentist office and i wanted to be put to sleep but my mom insisted that i stop being a baby and do it at the dental office, lol what im trying to do i pull an all nighter so tomorrow illl be too tired and sleep during the operation lol but i was nervous at first but even though i had no one to comfort me from my family, i mean at least either way the job gets done and it will be over before you know it i guess, and i guess there are worse things then getting teeth removed, and thats something i always plant in my head to make me feel better hope it works for you and i wish you the very best of luck :)
