Answers:

A bite plate is a type of removable appliance commonly used during orthodontic treatment. It is very similar to an acrylic retainer but usually does not have the wire going across the front teeth. The major difference is that the acrylic behind your upper front teeth is thicker in a bite plate - so much so that you will bite into it with your lower front teeth and your back teeth will not touch. The result will be that the back teeth will slowly erupt (upper teeth come down, lower teeth come up) until they touch again. This will have caused your front teeth to overlap less, since the purpose of a biteplate is to "open" the bite (reduce the amount that your upper front teeth vertically overlap your lower front teeth). It will take a few days to get used to it and because it covers the roof of your mouth, you'll have a lisp for those few days. But in a week or so you will adapt and speak normally again. The most important thing is that you wear it as prescribed by your doctor, because removable appliances like a biteplate only work when they are in your mouth.
