Baby teeth?!

Question:

Baby teeth?

My son is 13 yrs old and still has some baby teeth. What's bothering me is that he has his second canine tooth that has come down without loosing his baby one first. It's been like that for months now and is completely through. Just recently its done the same on the other side only it's just showing. He says when he touches it with his tongue it hurts. I have booked him into the dentist. Do you think he will need braces? I'm not sure what to expect. I took him to the dentist when it first started to come through and was told to leave it and let nature take it's course the baby tooth will fall out. But it's not even loose now. Are they likely to remove the primary teeth?

Answers:

Usually, retained baby teeth that are still present after its corresponding adult teeth erupted can be extracted, and that's the end of that. If the retained baby tooth has caused a permanent tooth to erupt in a crooked fashion (what we call "ectopic eruption"), then orthodontics might be indicated.

Your dentist will be able to tell you for sure after an evaluation.

Good luck!
