Question:

This may seem a li'l silly but whats the PERFECT procedure to brush your teeth?

And how many times should you do it in a day?
I thought I was a good oral hygenist, until my dentist recently discovered I need filling, And I don't want to encourage any more visits to the dentist than I already need - so whats the PERFECT way to brush your teeth... so that the brush reaches every nook and corner.

Answers:

Hi there...the recommended brushing technique is called the bass technique. This is when the toothbrush is angulated towards the gumline. A tiny space exists between the tooth n the gums which attracts a lot of bacteria. This area is often neglected during brushing as we r often focusing more on the teeth itself than gums. Therfore, tilt the toothbrush at a 45 degree angle towards ur gumline when brushing. Focus on two or three teeth only at any one time and spend abt 10secs brushing each section. Toothbrushing should last between 3 to 5 mins. Use a soft toothbrush as its gentle on the gums yet is effective in removing dental plaque, the main culprit of tooth decay n gingivitis. To reach ur back teeth more effectively, close ur mouth a little as this relaxes ur jaw muscles thereby making it easier for ur toothbrush to push its way in and reach the last tooth. Change ur brush once every 3 months or when the bristles are splayed, depending on which comes along first.
In addition to brushing, flossing once a day, before bed is important as well. This would remove bacteria between ur teeth and below the gumline. Lastly, do make it a point to visit ur dentist or hygienist at least once a year to detect any signs of disease in ur mouth. Hope these tips help!
