I love to chew on ice. Is it true that it can crack your teeth?!

Question:

I love to chew on ice. Is it true that it can crack your teeth?

Answers:

Yes it is true that ice can eventually crack your teeth. It can cause microscopic cracks that can let bacteria leach into your enamel and cause problems down the road. Our teeth were not made for that kind of abuse all of the time. If you have to chew on ice make sure that it is very small shaved ice. Let it mostly melt in your mouth not chew it. You can also have the same effects by chewing hard candy all of the time. For teeth that already have restorations in them this can make it even worse. Save your teeth now so that you can have them for your whole life. Brush and floss everyday, and try to give up that ice habit. Try to ask for no ice or light ice when you get drinks so you don't have so much to chew on. As I said try to limit your habit to small shaved ice. The big chunks are terrible for your teeth.
