Can you keep a partial denture in the mouth all the time?!

Question:

Can you keep a partial denture in the mouth all the time?

Of course after cleaning eat before going to bed , is it ok to put it back in the mouth?

Answers:

Not recommended. The soft tissue of your mouth needs to breath and by wearing your partial denture all night, even after you have cleaned it is not a good idea--- as the general bacterial in your mouth becomes also an irritant underneath the partial denture plastic--even though you have cleaned your mouth and the partial--we all have generalized bacteria constantly growing in our mouths.

It is understandable why you would wish to wear it--- as it may be embarrassing for other's to discover that you have a partial denture.

It is better to be discreet and store the partial denture out of your mouth than to have it cause a soft tissue (gum) problem---which may in the long run cause you a very painful situation in which you would not be able to wear the partial denture during the 'waking hours' ---when it certainly would be most noticeable.

If you have a partner AND they do not know about it---perhaps you might consider sharing your situation--- so that they can be more understanding--and so that you are not as embarrassed about your situation of having a partial denture. You would be amazed at the things we lament over and when it is finally said and done--- it usually isn't as bad as what we thought it would be.

Talk to your dentist--they will confirm---it is best to remove the removable (at least in the night) to allow your tissue a rest---fungus is the biggest problem--as well as cysts, canker sores and other tissue & teeth related problems that can happen-

The 1st link supports the protocol of taking the dentures out at night.

The 2nd link is to a bizzare article of Rare things that have happened while wearing your dentures in your sleep and of course during 'action activities such as sports' Read it for entertainment and certainly consider the warning.

Hope this helps-
