Tooth Extractions?!

Question:

Tooth Extractions?

Could anyone explain to me the whole procedure? And could anyone tell me if the injection part and the pulling out part hurts? Aaahh..I'm so scared..

Answers:

Extraction of a tooth; the whole procedure. (answered by a Texas Dentist that can't sleep)
First, the anesthetic. Placement of Topical anesthetic where the local anesthetic is going to be placed with the shot. Let that sit for at least 30 seconds to numb up the superficial tissue so the shot wont hurt as bad. Next, give the shot ( Usually 2 or more nerves supply a single tooth so more than one shot has to be given per tooth. Now if you are having more than one pulled in the same area, those shots may cover several teeth so its not number of teeth x 2 or 3. Relax though, if the dentist is good at his job, it wont be as bad as you think. Next after 5 or so minutes have gone by and your good and numb, the first step is to seperate the periodontal ligament from the tissue it attaches to that lies above the bone. This makes it easier to get the tooth out, and if not done properly could result in the tooth breaking and having to be taken out is several pieces, usually costing you more money. Next the tooth is elevated against the tooth next to it to try and break the PDL lying below the bone that attaches the tooth to the bone. Think of a see saw and imagine the heavy kid being the adjacent tooth (one not being pulled) and the tooth being pulled, the light kid. After this step it should be pretty mobile. Next and hopefully last, the forcepts are used to grab the tooth as low as possible, and uses forces like side to side or figure eight motions to completly eliminate any remaining ligaments and once that is done the tooth is eased out. You dont really pull very much at all. Its almost like pushing it out. REALIZE ONE THING. you will feel pressure the entire time. You should not however feel any pain. Sometimes people get those two feelings mixed up and I end up stopping several times thinking they are in pain but come to find out they say it was just pressure. The only way you can feel nothing at all is to be knocked out and that is usually pretty expensive. My advice is to relax, even if it has to be chemically induced (N2O2, or a pill 30 minutes before). If you are relaxed, the whole thing will go much faster and be less traumatic to you. I promise you this. The patients that get themselves all worked up before their appointment are almost always going to have just what they fear, a bad appointment. The patients that remain as cool and calm as they can, usually walk out with a smile. Hope I could help and good luck.
