Terrified of having my wisdom teeth out, any suggestions?!

Question: Ok, I've had 2 natural childbirths (as in NO pain medication), 2 major knee operations, an oral surgery and stitches in places you don't want to know about, but WHY am I so terrified of having my wisdom teeth out? I meditate, breathe deeply, practice visualization, etc.... But that doesn't help for some reason, I've canceled two appointments already to have it done, and I know its going to get worse as time goes.... but I just can't do it! Short of having someone drag me in there, how do I get my butt in gear to do this?? Whew...

all i can say is don't stress. you hear all these stories about how bad it can be and the swelling and pain and you can't eat for like a week etc .... let me tell you my story - i went under (gassed, it was so quick and pleasant!), had all 4 removed in the one operation and the painkillers they give you are great. i stopped taking them after 2 days, was practically onto solid food again and went to an 18th (couldnt drink of course, but still had a great night). i had no swelling and the slightest bruising - it was a breeze! the stitches just eventually dissolve away. so there is a chance that you will have the same experience as me, don't stress about the pain - the mouth is the fastest & healthiest healing place of the body, it will take care of itself, while you just relax!

advil

Can't they put you to sleep or hook you up with the happy gas?

It's perfectly normal to be scared about such things, but please don't worry. Both my parents are dentists, and I've had many teeth pulled in the past. When they put medication on it, it is completely painless. When they pull, you do not a feel a single thing, and I am not lying to you. I hate it when people lie about pain to me, so I would never do it to somebody else. It's quick, painless, and only slightly numb afterwards. Get over your fear, you can do it!

its really not all that bad to be quite honest i know this is gross but the worst part of it is just the sound because you honestly can't feel a thing once they numb you.

it's all in your head...I got two removed in one meeting and biked home afterwards....it's really not bad, not bad at all!

Well the procedure can have sevre complications, but you've already been through so much! Just make sure you have a good experienced dentist to give you that extra boost of confidence. And just think, when you get it all over with you will no longer have to dread it.

I got mine out and it was fine till I ran out of medicine.
Ask doctor about more medicine, Tylenol, get lots of rest,
Eat soft food as well

I just had mine out last summer and it wasn't bad at all. I too was really scared but with the advancements in technology the procedure is pretty painless. After of course there was some soreness but the drugs they provide take care of that no problem. It's nice to relax and not have much to do for a little while too. good luck, I hope all goes well.

You know what, I was terrified of this too. But i have to say, it wasn't that big of a deal. I was terrified of the anesthesia. My doctor hooked me up to a stereo which played my favorite music and the next thing I knew it was over. The worst part of it, was the little pockets of blood that formed in one, but they healed quickly. Girlfriend if you have given birth this is a cake walk.
Find an oral surgeon who has a better bedside manner and you'll be o.k., but get it done!

its really going to be okay..... they knock you out and you dont feel a thing until after..... as soon as your done with surgery take a pain pill cuz the pain will we bad after the anethsesia wears off.......after the first day you will only need advil dfor a few days... its really not that bad....

Get more information about it. Talk to the dentist/orthopedist, tell him you're afraid, but that you want to find out more about the procedure to help you get over the procedure. How long does it take, how does he start, what are the steps, will he do this under a local or general anesthetic, who assists, what are the complications, what is the usual recovery procedure and time, how much does he charge, where did he train, how many has he done..... get the idea?

As you learn more, one of 2 things will happen - either you'll identify the specific part that scares you, or you'll realize that there's nothing to fear. If you figure out a specific fear, you can ask more and more about that, and be reassured by the dentist.

i am never getting mine pulled, i went with my girlfriend and her mom when they got theirs pulled and it was BRU-TAL, i was in another room when they got it done and u can hear this really loud saw just hacking through bone and teeth and all that. so i cant really help much good luck though. xD

With all that you've been through..getting your wisdom teeth out should be the least of your worries!

Getting your wisdom teeth out from mine and my friends experiences isn't actually that bad. Sure it may be painful and hard to eat at first but you'll be fine, you've suffered enough already! :D

Do they need to come out? Why?
If you need to have them removed, just go.
Once they do the local anesthisia, you won't
feel a thing. I know this b/c my wife had this
done. We later found out that they didn't need
to come out, it was just a precausion for later
in life. She'll never know if that was true.
I'm 55 yrs old and still have all my teeth.
I go to the dentist once a yr. for cleaning.
She envies me!
