What is dental dam? I saw a show on HBO that the gitls asked touse dental dam. What is it?

As above, a dental dam is a small sheet of rubber, usually green or blue stretched over a "cage" or frame. a small hole is placed in it to correspond with your tooth, and the tooth is pushed up through the hole, so that only the tooth or teeth to be worked on is in field of vision. I t prevents any amalgam or debris from draining down your throat, and whilst uncomfortable, it is much easier than trying not to swallow bits of tooth and decay and metal. (They also smell like fruity latex gloves..) Don't ask me why.. lol
