Am I getting my wisdon teeth or is something wrong?!

Question:

Am I getting my wisdon teeth or is something wrong?

Today just out of nowhere my gum started to bug me just behind my last tooth. Its kind of swelled up and its not like its really hurting its just kind of annoying. I felt it and it feels a little hard it the center of where it swelled up. Am I getting a wisdom tooth? Im only 18 and I dont know at what age they start to come in. Also, if it was a wisdom tooth would it really come about this fast? I only started to notice it about 8 hours ago.

Answers:

Probably! If you're 18 you're getting them kind of late too (although not abnormally so!). Otherwise I'd suggest it was just irritation from hard food, but that wouldn't explain the bump.

Wisdom teeth start popping up between 16-20, and most people get them removed when their 17 or 18. Some people have all four, while others have only one (like me!). Although, after the initial pain of them growing in, wisdom teeth aren't an issue save for they're kind of annoying, most dentist do suggest you get them pulled so they don't end up pushing all your lovely teeth into uneven rows.

That little info aside, that's probably what's bothering you. My guess is they've actually been coming in for a couple of days now, and you've just been unconsciously playing with one with your tongue until, ow!, you noticed it today. My suggestion- your next dentist visit, tell your dentist they may be coming in and he'll arrange to have them taken care of. If you don't have an appointment anytime soon, and it's really bothering you, schedule a normal cleaning (you can never get enough of those!) and have him take a look.

As for getting them removed, it's not nearly as bad as people make it sound, trust me. ^_^ You are sore and puffy for a few days, but if you drink a lot of clear soda (like 7-up, Sprite or Ginger Ale) it'll get better quicker. If that's what it ends up being, good luck!
