I once had a taste of a smarty in my mouth one morning and I hadnt eaten them. I then a few days later developed a big lump on my gum, that when bigger and smaller. I was always aware of it being there, so I finally went dentist after 8 years and got my first 2 fillings, 1 being a root canal (thats where the lump an bad taste came from). As soon as she had done it the taste went an so did the lump. My tooth had infact died, but she saved it.

It could also be gum disease.
