When I was a child, my mom brought me into the dentist just to meet him and the dental assistants, get acquainted with the office, and ask questions about the instruments. I don't remember the pre-visit, but I do remember always associating the dentist with positive things, and I credit that with the reason for my good oral health.

To prepare your granddaughter mentally, you could start by talking a little about the dentist every day and discussing some good memories you had with your childhood dentist. For instance, my dentist always had crayons and coloring books in the waiting room and kids magazines to read. If she likes books, there is a Berenstain Bears book and a myriad of others you could read to her about visiting the dentist and a lot of them address the trepidation children feel.

Since I know it worked for me, I highly suggest you bring her in once without letting them do any cleaning, just to let her look around and associate it with something positive. Hopefully, she'll be curious enough about the equipment that she will forget her fear. Also, choosing a dentist who has kids himself is a really good idea.

Hope I helped!

Y the hell won't they let the Mum in? Well, maybe you could play dress up as dentists or something so as to make her feel more comfortable about it?

well, i assume they go to a pediatric dentist. they know how to handle all kids and usually the Mom is allowed to come in to watch. I have not heard that Moms are supposed to wait outside... Don't worry, it will all go well.

You have to make her open her mouth. You will probably see that she is going to cry or scream a lot when the dentist does the exam. That is normal. She needs to get used to opening her mouth for you and the dentist. You need to brush her teeth for her until she's 8 years old. If she wants to do it on her own, that's OK, let her. Just go behind her and brush again when she is done. If you don't make her open her mouth for you, she is going to have severe dental decay which CAN affect her permanent teeth.

I have seen cases where children have a cavity on a permanent tooth that just broke through the gum. It is possible for the baby teeth to have cavities the decay all the way through to the permanent tooth.

Good luck!
