How do you know your wisdom tooth is infected?!

Question:

How do you know your wisdom tooth is infected?

i think it is infected because the gum flap in the back is like sticking up.. but im not sure. i am going to the dentist tomorrow. but i am scared. is it serious?

Answers:

As a dental professional I can tell you not to be scared. It sounds like you have a common gum flap or "operculum" over the back of the tooth. These can often get infected since the tend to trap debris, but that may not be the case. If you had redness, pain, swelling, pus when you pushed on the area or a really bad taste I would be concerned. Rinse with salt water or an anteseptic mouth rinse and get some rest. They will give you their advice soon enough. Good luck
