Can you go back to wearing your retainer again after years and years of not wear!

Question: Well, I haven't worn my retainer since I was 18. I'm 23 now and want to start wearing it again but it seems like my teeth have shifted a lot and wearing it is very painful to my teeth, jaw, and even my sinuses. If I wear it consistently, will it fit like it did before or will my teeth just stay the way they are now?

Hello, Frankly my friend, you would be foolish to try to wear a retainer you gave up wearing so many years ago. While you may be able to get the retainer back in, it will not be properly able to provide the restoration of the previous tooth alignment. You would be risking possible damage to both gum bone and teeth. You should go back to an Orthodontist and get refitted with a correctly designed appliance that can safely move your teeth to a proper position. Good luck and I wish you well.

NO the teeth will have shifted & it probably will not go in your mouth!! Doc W

It all depends on how long you can stand wearing it. If you keep it in all the time except when you are eating then it should act like braces and move your teeth. Remember moving teeth takes time. Not only do you have to dissolve bone, but you also have to rebuild bone. I personally think you should revisit your orthodontist and see what they suggest.

hey this happed to me i have to have braces agine i had mine of 3 years ago and i went to the orothdotis and evan though my top teeth havent moved much i had to have a new reatainer made as my teeth my still move evan though they havent moved much in 3 years
