OK...First, the antibiotic is only a temporary fix, it's a 98% chance the infection will return, only this time more aggressive and painful. Keeping a natural tooth that will service you for a very long time is "always' preferable over an extraction. I completely understand that the decision can be a financial one. The cost figure you quote is out of line. The RTC (root canal) even on a molar shouldn't be more than $900 even if "all" the roots are done and the follow up crown, "if required" shouldn't be more than $700....If I were you and in the financial condition your in (no insurance), I would call the "Out Patient Clinic" of the nearest Dental College, make an appointment and get the RTC done there....Also, while many Dentist want to automatically place a Crown over a tooth they have just done an RTC on, it's not always mandatory...unfortunately their are dental professionals who are more interested in their bank balance than providing only the "required" services....Consider a second opinion from another dentist. OH Yes, the Dental College fee will be between FREE and very LOW. Good luck and I wish you well.

To save your tooth is better way, but if you don't have dental insurance... better to have, maybe this can help: http://www.dentalplans.com/afftracker.as...

This is an horrendous price. The people in the UK grumble about dental costs, thankfully they appear to be a lot less that your costs.

I think that what you are contemplating is what we call a root filling in the UK. In my experience it does not always solve the problem. I have had this done and it became infected again after a few months.

The antibiotics may have resolved this and you may not need any additional treatment. If you do and you decide on a root canal, I should ask your dentist if this is guaranteed. If it is not guaranteed and if there is a possibility of the abscess coming back I would go for an extraction as long as the gap will be towards the back.

I you extract the tooth just to save money now you will end up spending more money later! I will explain. Once the tooth is gone you have an open space. The teeth behind the space want to drift to fill the space but instead of just moving into the space it naturally tilts toward the space causing a leaning appearance. This lead to a deep pocket (bone loss) on the side of the tilted tooth that is tilted. You could eventually loose that one as well. The tooth opposite of the extracted one is effected as well. They depend on each other to "bite" to keep them in place. For example: if you have a lower tooth extracted, the upper tooth that use to hit against it will start to Super-erupt that is it will start to drop down to fill the space because it no longer has anything to hit against. This will also cause bone loss and a mobile tooth. You could lose this one as well. To prevent any of these happening you would have to get a bridge made ( which is not cheep either) So to make a long story short you will have more problems that will cost you more money if you extract. Keeping your natural tooth is always the best choice!
I agree with Floyd on the dental school in you area it will be a fraction of the cost if any. But I dis agree about waiting for a crown placement. Once you have a root canal the tooth is weaker and can be fractured if not protected with a crown. You would hate to spend the money on the RCT and still have to extracted it because you waited too long to protect it!

it is always better to save a tooth. but i suggest shopping around as this price does seem very high

u see....u did not mention ur age.......if u are an older individual then it doesnt mind going for extraction....otherwise....its better u go for root canal...

If it was me, I'd remove the tooth!
