Do I really need a filling?!

Question: I went to the dentist yeaterday for my normal 6 month check up. I 'm 34 but have really good teeth and have only had one filling. The dentist took an xray and I got a call today to say I need a couple of fillings. I don't have any holes in my teeth and have no pain so how can this be? He didn't spot anything when he looked at them during my check up and he said that I had good teeth so I find it a bit strange that he has decided that I need some fillings How does it show up on an xray that this needs doing? Thanks

Your dentist can look at most surfaces of your teeth during a visual exam. The only surfaces he cannot see are the interproximal surfaces (the points where the teeth touch each other). This is the area that does not get cleaned by toothbrushing and only flossing can keep clean.

Once decay has progressed far enough to cause a hole or pain then it has likely gone too far to be fixed by a simple filling and it is far more likely to require a root canal treatment and a crown. That is why we recommend 6 month check ups so we can so small simple fillings before the teeth cause problems and require far more extensive treatment.

Start flossing!

Yeah sometimes teeth may look good on the outside but just to make sure the dentist does an xray as you can see into the tooth. He must have noticed on the xray something that means you need fillings. Ring up the dentist and ask what is actually wrong, next time you ask to look at the x-ray, I would if i was in your predicament!

by the time you feel pain or can see a hole, the decay has become extremely advanced. it is best to have ti filled in before it reaches this point!
if he says you need it, you need it, i would trust him
perhaps he saw dark spots in the teeth, or something...

Cant answer you sorry, not a dentist.

He perhaps noticed the begginning of a hole on the xray you couldnt see with the bare human eye on the xray he also could have seen thinning of the enamel, and this usually happens before a hole did occur. Ring your dentist and ask them to see the xrays and ask them to show you why and where you need a filling. Good Luck

you definatly need a fling,,,,,its the only way to get over her!!!!
