Orthodontic spacers are used in orthodontics before braces are applied on teeth and are put on the molars at the second orthodontic appointment. Spacers are circular rubber bands about a centimeter in diameter placed between top and bottom molars, there may be 1-12 spacers applied. In some cases, an orthodontist may use a metal spacer, which is a small piece of metal that rings around the tooth. The spacers stay between the teeth for about two weeks and move the teeth apart slowly until they are far enough apart that the dentists can fit a tooth brace in between them. Spacers are worn until the orthodontist removes them or if they are removed accidentally, often by the patient who may chew gums and sticky foods which sticks to the spacer and pulls it out on some ocassion. Sometimes, a dentist may use a spacer that is similar to a metal spacer, but is removable and in some cases it may have a key/string to use to adjust the tightnest. These types of spacers are very similar to a retainer because of their ability to be removed. They are taken out before braces are put on.

Everyone reacts differently to having spacers between their teeth. If the patient has relatively no space between their molarsthe spacer may hurt from the irritated nerves in the gum of the mouth. In some cases the spacer digs into the gums and they begin to bleed and swell, for which orthodontists often hand out special anesthetics which numb the pain. Spacers are usually not painful, although pain relievers can alleviate the pain if needed. When spacers are first applied, there is little to no pain at all; but the gum around the tooth often hurts after the first night's sleep.

Spacers are little tiny rings that the dentist puts in between your teeth to make a small space. They are generally used before someone gets braces put on. They use the spacers so there is enough room to put the band around the back teeth.

they are little elastics they stick in between your teeth to make space for the bands for braces

Spacers are small donut-shaped rubber bands that fit in the middle of your back mollers which create, obviously, space in between them. When your braces get on, they will be putting a metal bracket on the back of your teeth, and you need space in between them for the metal to fit well.

When they apply the spacers, that's the end of your gum-chewing, sticky candy-eating ways, because if your spacers fall out, depending on your doctor, you may have to wait an entire week before getting your braces on.

Other than that, they sometimes feel as if something is stuck in your teeth. Nonetheless, they're not a big deal.

Good luck!

theyre real itty bitty rubber bands the stick in between your teeth. their there to make space in between your teeth.. usually for a tooth to grow in or for an appliance you might be getting put in. theres no pain whatsoever. theres a little pressure when their first put in.. but it goes away. =D

Spacers create space for the metal bands that go around you back teeth that hold you braces on. Hope that was helpful. :)

its a rubber band shoved in between your teeth in order to make room for the metal bands that hold the wires in =]
they're not bad trust me

spacers are little rubber band like things that go around ur back teeth to "space" them out. they need to be spaced out so they can put a hook on ur teeth to keep ur wire in place
