Surgical extraction post-op bleeding normal for how long?!

Question:

Surgical extraction post-op bleeding normal for how long?

I had an upper molar pulled. It was a fractured tooth and was also being prepped for an implant, so they had to cut some of the gum I guess to get it out all nice and clean and put the bone pieces in... Anyways, it's been almost 48 hours and it still continues to bleed a bit. It's not streaming out or anything but my spit (which I try not to do) has some blood in it still and the stitches itch, which makes my tongue mess with the area whenever I let my guard down (perhaps in my sleep too). How long is it normal for an incision/extraction like this to bleed a bit after the procedure? I figure the longer it keeps seeping blood the longer it is susceptible to bacteria, so I am hoping it stops soon.

Answers:

A bit of bleeding for a couple days is quite normal after any extraction. The main thing to remember is that if you play with it with your tongue, or suck on it, it's possible to actually suck the clot out of the socket. This is referred to as a "dry socket" and is extremely painful. Leave it alone, don't toy with it and it should be fine. It's common for sutures to itch. Just bear with it and you'll be fine.
