Question:
I am considering getting my tongue pierced. But am wondering about the dental risk?
I have recently had my braces removed and currently have to wear an orthodontic plate in my mouth all the time. If i get my tongue pierced will it damage the plate? (They are expensive to replace). Please help. xx
Answers:
Yes, you could crack your plate. Many of my patients with tongue piercings have also gone on to crack multiple teeth. The problem with this is that you can end up needing a filling, root canal or crown because of the trauma. The cost and time involved with of any of these are pretty considerable. And that isn't even considering the potential of infection at the site of the piercing. Honestly, I just wouldn't recommend it, though you certainly are in charge of making that decision.
