Tightening of orthodontic braces?!

Question:

Tightening of orthodontic braces?

I went to the orthodontist today to have my braces tightened for the first time. It was really, really, really painful!! Is this normal?? The dentist seemed really surprised at how much pain I was in and had to stop tightening them as much as was needed.

I was really surprised at how painful it was too because since I have had my braces I haven't really had any pain with them - nothing that I couldn't handle: not once have I needed any painkillers, because any pain I experienced was very mild!!
Do you think that next time I get them tightened it would be a good idea to take painkillers prior to having them tightened??

Answers:

It is normal, and I think it would be a good idea to take some ibuprofen before you go in next time.
