I have braces. What should I cut the wire in the back with?!

Question: The wire in the back is now sticking up, because at first it was cutting my lip so I tried bending it. Then, that led to standing up so I tried cutting it with toe nail clippers, scissors [the little ones], and a nail filer. I went to the ortho yesturday and am not going back anytime soon. Please do not suggest calling or going back to ortho. Does anyone have any ideas? I don't have the wax stuff either to cover it. I can't eat or close my mouth with it sticking up

Depending on the size of wire you have, it may not be possible to cut the part that is poking you. Orthodontists use pretty heavy duty wire cutters that are sized to fit into your mouth. What you can do to make yourself more comfortable until you can get into your ortho (sorry, it's really the only way...) is to cut a piece of eraser off the top of a pencil and poke it onto the end of the wire that's bothering you. This will keep it from poking you.

I really urge you to go back to the orthodontist, because when you tried bending and moving the wire, you changed the forces that are being applied to your teeth. This can move the teeth in ways that the orthodontist doesn't want, and sometimes it takes a long time to get teeth back into their proper position. I'm sure you want to finish your braces soon as possible, and so you really really really have to get back in to your ortho's office. Next time you have a pokey wire, remember the eraser trick.

If I were you I would schedule an appointment with the orthodontist as soon as possible so they can fix it so you wouldn't mess anything up.

Good Luck :)

Why shouldn't you go back to the orthodontist? It's easier to do it from the dentists position rather than have you look in a mirror without adequate lighting or instruments (nail clippers?). We have ortho wire cutters. 5-10 seconds and it's done.

Don't do this orthodontic adjustment yourself, it may cause problems and delay your treatment. For instance when my patient tries to super glue their crown back onto their tooth. Then they realize it was backwards, not in proper occlusion, and the crown now has to be cut off.

Go to the supermarket and buy wax in the meantime. Yes, they sell wax in the dental aisle. Or try a drugstore like Walgreens.

I had the same problem. I played with the wire and eventually it went down. I just got new wires yesterday and and its poking me again my mom would be mad too if she had to take me back. So i constantly push at it with my tongue and i push it down with my finger or fingernail. If none of that works put big gobbs of wax on it until the next time you go to the orthodontist and then ask him if he can trim it.

i have braces also and i get my dad to get the pliers (clean them first) and then i open wide and he clips off the excess wire without a problem

u can buy the wax stuff at target and at shop rite no lie go to the toothbrush section

I had the same problem i went to get my teeth cleaning. And they had to take the Wires off and somehow I didn't notice that one of the wires was poking my cheek in the back. ( I tried to cut it by myself not a good idea. I tried cutting them with scissors and I thought i broke my brackets but I didn't). So i called the Dentist and they told me to come In. It seriously just took like 30 seconds. She just grabbed this special thing and cut the extra wire off.

You can try using a clean pencil eraser to gently push the wire into place. Depending upon the thickness of your wire, it may or may not be possible. Do you know if yours is a temperature responsive wire? (Your ortho may have explained this to you.) If so, try drinking something cold before bending it. The cold will make it more flexible and easier to manipulate.

This isn't a permanent fix though and you really should return to your ortho to have it snipped. (While you're there, ask for some wax!) I've had to go in several times for the same reason and in my case, most of time it was the day after an adjustment.

Poking wires are miserable. Good luck!
