What is the point of getting dental braces even if you have to use a retainer?!

Question: The story is that I used to have dental braces and I haven't use my retainers in a long while just because I lost them! The question is that what is the point of getting dental braces when you suppose to wear your retainer almost all the time after you got yout dental braces off?!

Braces has many good benefits other than just you often look better. Crowded teeth can be a bacteria trap and cause gum disease/ bone loss around teeth. Crowded teeth can make you more likely to loose your teeth. If you wear the retainers regularly for the first year it helps your bone set back and you don't have to wear the retainers except at night time or less than that. Some offices place permanent retainers that are cemented on the back sides of teeth to help with this, but this prevents the same gum disease problem b/c you can't usually floss these and they are very hard to keep clean. Another good benefit to braces is aligning your jaw joint properly, which can cause severe poping, clicking, and pain if not corrected.

So your teeth are strait and stay strait.

U won't have to wear ur retainer forever! After awhile, u only have to wear it at night, then eventually not at all. U need to wear ur retainer to prevent ur teeth from moving back to their original position. If u don't wear it, ur braces were a waste!!

Hello

Braces will correct the malocclusion, will align the teeth.

Retainers are recommended to prevent any rellapse which commonly happens after almost 70% of the treated cases, as there is continous tooth movement throughout the age.

Retainers are not strong enough and not functionally adapted to correct the mal-aligned teeth.

They are not the replacement for braces..only act as an adjuvant when the braces are removed

:)

Ahhhh, let me draw an off the wall parallel to your comment, "why get braces if you have to then wear a retainer from then on?", (paraphrased of course).....Ok let me ask you this, "what's the use in getting an education if you have to support your self every day thereafter?".....In both cases you achieve a goal, in both cases it takes time, in both cases you have a momentary investment, and in both cases the results, if properly practiced, will serve you well for the rest of your life. SO, how about looking at the retainer as a parallel to when once you get that great job, because of a successful education, (teeth straightened), you show up at work on time everyday, (you wear your retainer), and because you show up everyday, your job is secure and you have a successful life......On the other hand, stop wearing the retainer and your teeth go back to their crooked, out of alignment original condition, don't show up for work and your back to being out of a job......Now you tell me what makes since and is important.... Good luck and I wish you well.

The braces align your teeth to a correct position. After you have them removed the retainer retains your teeth in that same position. When you had your braces on they shifted to the position the wire was bent to. Now that you have them off your teeth will naturaly shift back to the position they were once in. Thats where the retainer comes in and keeps them in place. Hope this helps!

Because the retainer keeps them in place. You see when you go to the orhodontist every month to get your teeth moved into place and your braces tightend they are loose. When you get your braces off and get your retainer your teeth are still loose though you might not feel that they are. It is VERY important to wear your retainer. I suggest you find it.
