Pretty much true.

The goal is to stabilize it and keep it from getting worse.

Once there has been actual destruction of the bone around the teeth it will not grow back, regardless of what you do.

It's similar to diabetes or high blood pressure - its "silent" - you don't really "feel" it, but its always there and it can't really be cured - you just manage it as best as possible.

The type of treatment and maintenance program you need depends on the severity of the condition.

Good Luck!

Yes, many people have a genetic link that makes them more likely to get this, but it is activated normally by poor oral hygiene or failure to get regular professional cleanings. Once it has started, you have it. The goal is to stop progression and put it into a latent stage, like a virus. And like a virus, it can always re activate if hygiene worsens, an severe health problem occurs like diabetes, or you fail to get regular cleanings. Once you have it your are more prone to problems. A secret to helping with this problem is a daily multivitamin and calcium supplement. Bone loss often occurs first in the mouth when calcium is low, so take your vitamins and calcium. You can get the bone back from treatments with a periodontist (someone who specializes in periodontal treatment). The newest treatment involves laser treatment to stimulate cell/ bone regrowth which didn't use to be possible. Now, in intervals they use the laser and stimulate bone growth and have people over the year/years actually regrow bone. Or, there is the old bone grafts/surgery to replace bone.

Hi, check out this site> http://www.perio.org/consumer/2a.html
it might help.
Also use the supplement Coenzyme Q10: In a few studies involving small numbers of subjects, CoQ10 supplements caused faster healing and tissue repair. Additional studies are needed to evaluate the effectiveness of CoQ10 when used together with traditional therapy for periodontal disease.

I have used Q10 (30mg) daily and it made my gums pinker and stronger, but for worse cases the dose should be higher, pls ask your doc.
Good luck
