I have a porblem. I bite the inside of my lips and cheeks. How can I stop?!

Question:

I have a porblem. I bite the inside of my lips and cheeks. How can I stop?

I tried chewing gum when I had temptations... it didn't work very well. It seems to happen more when I'm stressed or depressed, or even just bored. Any suggestions?

Answers:

It is very hard to quit, because the habit has been with you for so long. Everyone has a line on their mucosa where their teeth occlude (come together). Over time, this line becomes more prominant and is more susceptible to being bitten. Don't worry. There are no studies that actually show any corrilation to oral cancer. Bitting your mucosa or lips is often a response to stress and is done on a subconscious level. Usually relaxing helps to aliviate some of the stress and thus lead to less cheek bitting. If that doesn't work, talk to your dentist and he or she might have an appliance made for you that you can use when you sleep or are hanging out at home to sheild your skin from being bitten.
