I have braces-they will be three years old on the 18th and I will be getting them off before September.I think I know basically everything that can help you =D
All gum is going to attach to your brackets at some point-just play with it with your tongue until it gets loose.Don't get hard bubble gum-that's definitely going to break something.
Don't eat anything hard after you get your braces on for the first time.Your teeth will be numb and it will be difficult for you to eat.I had trouble eating an untoasted peanut butter and jelly sandwich.Perhaps this was because I have very sensitive teeth.Don't bite into an apple or a carrot.I once bit into a carrot and it hurt a bit-my bracket got twisted up.Every now and then the metal thing surrounding my teeth will get loose or a wire will get bent-but that hasn't happened to me for the past year and a half. You'll get used to braces.I was so scared that I would break them when I first got them.Personally, I think dentists overreact.I've never had problems eating an apple. They say to avoid pretzels and gum-heck, I eat them all the time and my braces are in mint condition.
Getting your braces on doesn't hurt AT ALL.It's just a bit uncomfortable because they have this plastic thing keeping your mouth wide open. When they take that off it is SUCH a relief!Usually after you get them they will put on some video about braces that shows you what to eat and what not to eat.Just follow that for the first few days, but be careful.Gum can really screw up your braces, as well as hard candy. If you have any questions on what to eat and what not to eat, feel free to email me (lissa1025@yahoo.com) or talk to your orthodontist.
I wish you the best of luck and a beautiful smile!
