Answers:

Ah, it's not "crap" It's neccesary, especially if your gum or "periodontal" health is of concern. It means that the dentist will go below the gum a few millimetres, and do a deep clean of all the tartar deposits that you can no longer reach or clean off with your toothbrush. they use different shaped cleaning currettes for each area of the mouth. it can take up to around half an hour, sometimes longer, and is a delicate procedure. there may be a little bleeding, depending on the actual health of you gums before you went in. The less healthy they were, the more they will bleed at the time. It shouldn't be that uncomfortable. I can assure you, in order to keep the bone that supports your teeth (otherwise they will fall out) this is a very neccesary procedure and your dentist will be saving you money by doing it themsleves and not sending you to a specialist who does it all day, but for twice the cost.
