I am a dentist. If you are unhappy with the first dentist you have two options, go back just to get the Rx correct or go see one close by. Once you take the antibiotics they prescribed you then you will feel much better. Also buy a little syringe at the drug store and fill it with listerine. Then squirt it around the area where you see the tooth poling through the tissue. Your infection is caused by food and plaque getting trapped under the tissue where it is poking through, called pericornitis. This will continue to come and go until you have the tooth taken out, however the antibiotics and the listerine rinses should calm it down and keep you very comfortable until an oral surgeon can see you . Also some general dentists can remove regular and impacted 3rd molars, but make sure that you are sedated before this happens. Also another alternative is to go to a nearby dental school if there is one. The resident dentists, not students usually take out teeth like yours.

Call your dentist and, have him/her call in the correct prescription to the pharmacy. In the mean time check you phone book or internet for another dental surgeon. I know an impacted wisdom tooth is one of the worst pains there is and, can cause permanent damage to your other teeth.
Aspirin, Tylenol or, ibuprofen should help until you can get something stronger.
I'm not sure why the doctor won't fax another prescription to the pharmacy. Unfortunately traveling back to the dentist maybe your only option.

some prescriptions are regulated by a schedule of the DEA and can not be phoned in or faxed in do to their potential for abuse. If it is for pain then this is why. an antibiotic should be able to be called in. If you are not happy with your choice of a dentist, find another one and if they can not get you in to the oral surgery office earlier than a week then you need to ask him for a different referral. Tell him you can not wait that long.
