Can dental x-rays see through braces?!

Question:

Can dental x-rays see through braces?

I have braces, and I'm going to get them off soon, but I'm scared I'll have cavities - let's just say I could have brushed a bit better.

Whenever the dentist takes an x-ray of my teeth (with braces), he says I have no cavities. But is he just looking at the teeth w/o the brackets, or can the x-ray see through them? Answers welcomed and appreciated!

Answers:

No he can't see through them. The metal shows up white on the film. If the metal is laying over where the decay is, then he can't see it unless it is really big.

I recommend that you get a full set taken when you get them off so that you can see if you do have any cavities.
