I have a terrible toothache and my cheek is swollen. Help, please!?!

Question: I just got back from a 2.5 day (3 days, 2 nights) camping trip with my family.

After dinner on the 1st night, I started getting pain in one of my upper left teeth. I didn't think much of it, so I took some Advil and was able to cope through the 1st night.

However, when I woke up on the 2nd morning, I noticed the pain was back with tremendous force. Now it felt like I had 4 or 5 teeth that were ultra-sensitive.

Since we were in a state park, there weren't really many options for me. My mom and I drove to one of the on-site convenience stores and looked for some Orajel, but they didn't have anything like that.

I settled on just doubling up my Advil and eventually the pain numbed enough to be tolerable.

I'm back home now and just woke up because I was feeling overheated (sunburn).

I went to the bathroom to wash my face and winced as soon as I touched my face... my left cheek is noticeably swollen and super sensitive.

Does anyone know what's going on with my teeth?

Please, help! :(

Your tooth has decay and it is infected..

What happened initially with this tooth is that the bacteria has penetrated beyond the dentine and inhabits the pulp!

Eventually the nerve has died and has become necrotic, spontaneos pain is also present because of the same reason
The condition is known as irreversible puplitis, situations in which exquiselty sensitive hot (cold initially)or hurts spontaneously without an external stimulus may have a dieing nerve and only solution to this problem is to perform a root canal!

Situation will get better after the root canal therapy!

To reduce the swelling you can start rinsing frequently with hot salt water solution-- dissolve ?-teaspoon of salt in 8 ounces of water as hot as you can tolerate without burning your mouth, and rinse for two minutes every four hours, this will provide you relief.

As your tooth is abscessed you also need antibiotics, you need r to take complete course of antibioitics to reduce the infection. You can take Amoxicillian 500 mg thrice daily, for 5 days.Read more about this drug here:

If you happen to be allergic to pencillin, the second choice is Erythromycin.Read more about this drug here:

You can contact the ER at the hospital and the attending physician can give you the prescription.

Avoid eating, hot, spicy and hard food.Donot brush hard or chew hard foods from that area.

Make an early appointment with your dentist, get an xray made and get the treatement done.

It sounds like you have an abcess devoloping, make an appointment with your dentist as soon as possible.

IF COLD HELPS, get out the blender and make ice water slushies. Grind ice in the amount of liquid you would use to make slushies. The cold will numb it if it is the nerve.

Good luck.

I went through 50 little pop ice pop cicles and several blenders of ice slushies.

My advice is just to get you through til the dentist can see you. I expect you need to get to the dentist today for x-rays and medications.
