Answers:

Sorry, you're not "good to go" by putting gauze in and smoking after having extractions. You're asking for a dry socket and if that happens, you'll experience SEVERE pain. After you've had an extraction you need the blood clot from the socket or extraction site for primary intent healing to occur. If you do certain things such as the things listed on the sheet of "Do No Do" post operative instructions that your dentist gave you, you are risking losing the blood clot in the socket. Then, you get a dry socket which means you'll have to heal from the inside out which is a slow, painful process. Any type of "vacuum" type activities like when you suck on a straw, spit, or smoke can make you lose the blood clot. Since you are a smoker your options are to just take the risk and hope for the best, but know that you may regret it big time; or use this an oppty to stop smoking; or you need to hold off from smoking for 48 hours, then use good judgment for several more days. Trust me, you don't want a dry socket and you won't wonder if you have it or not, the PAIN will let you know. Not fun. Good luck to you :)
