Two Root Canals Today!!?!

Question: Hey yall, I just had Two Root Canals done this morning, by an Endodontist. Doesn't that sound like fun. Now my mouth is annoyingly numb and starting to get a little sore. Any dental professionals have tips on what I should eat for the next couple days and how to handle brushing and flossing? I'm going to call later this afternoon to set an appt. for the crowns. So yeah, anyone with tips, advice or whatever, please chime in. Thanks a bunch!

Sounds like you've had a fun morning. I don't know how large the opening were, how much tooth structure is left, or if the access opening are filled with a permanent build up or with a temp cement. All of these are factors that should be considered before telling you what you can or can't eat. If you know you have a permanent build up material in these access openings, you will have a stronger tooth structure and can withstand chewing most normal foods, just avoid nuts or hard chips. If there is temp cement in the access openings, then you should eat a soft diet avoiding these teeth. In either case, give the teeth a rest for a few days, soft diet only, allowing them to recover from the procedure today.

If you are unsure of what you have in the openings, you can always call your endodontist office and ask them what was placed and what type of diet you should eat. This would be the easiest way for you to know for sure what you can and can't eat.

As for pain, they should have given you a prescription for a mild pain medication, take this and about two hours later take an Ibuprofen such as Advil or Motrin at a 600mg dose every 4-6 hours to help reduce the inflammation in the surrounding tissue. Tonight will be your most uncomfortable night, but by tomorrow you should be feeling much better and may not need anything other than an Ibuprofen.

You can continue to brush as normal. Flossing these two teeth would be better accomplished by placing the floss in between the teeth, flossing under the tissue gently and then rather than pull the floss up as you normally would, gently pull or slide the whole piece of floss completely through and out. Don't pull up (or down which ever the case may be) or you may pull the temp completely out if the floss catches the margin of the temp material.

Additional information: Yes, since they informed you the tooth is missing a good bit of tooth structure and both have temporary cement, then it's advisable to stay with a soft diet such as soups and smoothies, at least until you have a build up placed or the crown work done.

Heya, lucky you.
A bit of post op discomfort/tenderness/pain is not considered abnormal after root canal treatment.
Brush and floss normally. They probably put quite a solid core filling in (which will also act as a base for the crowns).
Take a painkiller that you normally take (ibuprofen if not allergic is great). That will help settling things down.
Just be careful with hard foods before the crowns are done. You don't want to break the tooth.
Hope this helps and good luck with avoiding this type of treatment ;)
