I have a horriable fear of the dentist due to a really bad gag reflex what can I!

Question: I avoid the dentist at all cost because when people work i my mouth I gag really bad which makes me anxious just walking in the door. It gets bad enough that I have thrown up out side the office. Would nitrious help me, or sedation which i looked into but is way too expensive. Does anyone have this problem or dealt with this problem? If I dont get this figured out soon all my teeth are going to fall out. PLEASE HELP!!!!

When you gargle in the back of your throat with scope or listerine for a few minuites it numbs the back of your throught. It is not as effective as a chloraceptic is though. I saw some in the pharmacy the other day. What it does is it numbs and coats your entire mouth. It comes in a spray, its often used when your sick and stuff. So check there :)

Also if you breath through your nose it COMPLETELY helps :) Also think about ANYTHING else. Tell your Dental assistant, shes trained in helping with stuff like that! When i take Impressions on people they gag ALL the time, i tell them to breath through their nose, then i try and distract them by telling them to life their leg, then i tell them no not that one, the other one! Back and forth until they forget about the gagging :)
Hope this helps hun!!

I would call the dentist and ask what they would advise, and then make sure with your doctor that you don't have any reactions to the nitrous or sedation.

let them fall out

Chloraseptic Throat Spray-it will numb the back of your throat and lasts about an hour. Breath through your nose, too. I had a dental hygienist tell me something about salt on the tongue, too. You could ask what that's all about.
