Took amoxicillian 500mg, now mouth is swollen?!

Question: i have a tooth that needs a root canal & im putting it off as long as i can until i get some money...
yesterday the tooth was hurting really bad, throbbing! i took amoxicillian 500mg.. just 1, along with a tylenol 3.
this morning i woke up with my mouth/cheek swollen. my tooth doesnt hurt anymore but the surrounding area is swollen!

is this a sign the infection is going away?

ps, i dont need the "go to the dentist" replies... i know that already, it's in the process.

Hi,

Your swelling is not due to the amoxicillin but in fact it is due to the spread of infection (mostly bacteria and pus) from your tooth through your soft tissues and into your cheeks. Your tooth doesn't hurt any more because the pressure of the infection inside your tooth has been 'released' into your cheek(kind of like how a popped blister doesn't hurt anymore.) Continue with the antibiotics and it may reduce the swelling over the short term but it sounds as if you might need the tooth removed. Please go see the dentist soon because it can become a serious issue if the infection spreads to an area in your neck that can compromise your airway (its EXTREMELY RARE but it does happen and is very very serious).

You shouldn't have taken amoxicillin without a doctor's prescription! It's an antibiotic and you have to complete the entire course! I'm not sure what caused the swelling, but you really gotta see a doctor asap to have it looked at. Take care!

Your tooth could be infected which can cause your face to swell. It's actually can be very serious. Infections can spread to other organs including your brain. I know you don't want to hear go to the dentist but this could certainly turn into something much worse very easily. I had this happen to me recently and I waited a few days and my tooth was badly infected it took 3 trips and 10 days of antibiotics to get rid of it but I'm glad I did considering what the dentist told me about it spreading. Take this seriously this is your health you are talking about!

Your dentist should have told you to not only take the medicine as instructed, but to call immediately if your symptoms got worse. Did you have some swelling and it just got worse, or did the swelling begin after you took the medication? Is the swelling on one side of your face, or both? This will give the dentist an idea of how fast the infection is spreading or if you are having a reaction to the medicine. If you are running a fever, or see redness or are hot to the touch on your face - get help as soon as you can. If you start feeling numbness or tingling, tightness in your chest, or have a difficult time swallowing or breathing- get help immediately! What you do not want to have happen is the infection spreading into your blood- as this can be life threatening or have any type of reaction to the medication- this too can be life threatening.

Good Luck and get your tooth taken care of as soon as you can.

If you are not allergic to penicillin and have taken it before with no reaction then you should be fine but make sure you Finnish the antibiotic. If you don't you can get a super-infection which will be worse. You will not be able to put it off too long!

You will need to take all of the antibiotics as prescribed. I think they generally prescribe 3 or 4 pills per day for about a week. You need to take them at the regular intervals (on an empty stomach for better absorption), not just when the tooth is bothering you. Make sure that you continue to take it until it's gone, and not stop when it's feeling better.
