Hi, I understand where you are coming from as I'm in the process now. The best advice I can give you is if your orthodontist mentioned jaw surgery, there may also be some sort of deformity or problem with your jaw. I wore braces as a teen and although it straigntened my teeth and overbite that was associated with it, it did not correct the jaw and I still had the jaw overbite. I am now 46 and wearing braces once again. This time it is functional. Although I don't like my profile and I cannot close my mouth comfortably, believe me, if it is the jaw and it's function, it can cause physical problems as you get older.....headaches, chronic dry mouth which can lead to other problems, digestive problems due to inability to chew properly and other things as well. I have had my braces for a year now and due for surgery in about 4 months. It goes by quickly though. I also just got married while in braces(he doesn't mind them). If you take care of everything now, you will have less to worry about in the future. I wish I had done this sooner. Yes, it is costly but check into insurance/payment options. I wish you all the best.
