Preventing cold sores at the dentist?!

Question:

Preventing cold sores at the dentist?

My husband only gets cold sores when he goes to the dentist. It's not from the dentists' tools, it's because of the work he's getting done. For example he had a molar extracted which bleed for 3 days, chapped his lips, and he got one from that.

His teeth are quite bad because he won't go if fear of getting a cold sore. He's finally willing to get them all fixed up.

Is there a pill he can take to prevent them? He doesn't want to be on pills all the time, but for the time that he's getting this work done i think it might help. Any other cold sore prevention tips?

Answers:

Advise him to apply Vaseline to his lips directly before entering the dentist office. Most probably his lips are too dry from all that long dental work. My dentist always does that to her patients before starting on a long dental procedure. Either that the cold sores might emerge due to stress. If stress is the culprit, then there's nothing much you can do about it unless he does all his dental work under sedation or general anaesthesia.
